One hundred twenty-three teachers in the Department of Education have met the high standards and demanding criteria to achieve
certification by the
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. To
encourage more of Hawaii’s public school teachers to attain this level of excellence, the National
Board Certification Incentive Program has been established to provide a yearly salary bonus and fee reimbursement
to teachers who receive certification.
The Department of Education hires more than 1,300 new teachers every year. To ensure that a pool of qualified
teachers is available, funding for eight faculty positions has been given to the University of Hawaii’s
College of Education.
